Patrick Hamilton Walsh, the second of four children of Paudraig and Catherine Walsh, had a wonderful, happy childhood in Co. Tyrone, Northern Ireland, where he lived with his parents until he graduated from the University of Ulster, with a BA Hons Degree in Business Studies and a Dip HE in Accounting.
Patrick then moved to Dublin to start a career in Accounting. While in Dublin, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant while in Articles with Grant Thornton, before gaining employment with PricewaterhouseCoopers. It was during this time in PricewaterhouseCoopers that Patrick qualified as a Taxation Consultant and a Qualified Financial Advisor.
In 2007 he decided to quit the rat race and fulfil another of his life-long dreams of travelling the world. But Patrick doesn’t do things by half and instead of doing the usual backpacking Australasia adventure, he wandered off the beaten track and managed to traverse as much of every continent as is humanly possible.
During the next two-and-a-half years his travel itinerary included overlanding from London to Sydney, from Cape Town to Kigali in Rwanda and from Vasteras in Sweden to Neko Harbour, Antarctica. Patrick has set foot on every continent on earth and believes he is probably the only person to have swam directly off the coast of each one… he even braved the icy waters of Antarctica!
It was during these travels that Patrick saw the potential growth for Facebook, and social networking in general, and came up with the idea for ‘is: The Phenomenon of the Facebook Status’ before setting to work on the book.
Patrick has never owned any type of computer equipment (and still doesn’t) so did the majority of his research in Internet cafes across the world. It wasn’t until he arrived in Sydney that the final, magical touches were added to the book and it was sent to the publishers.
It was only after his courageous adventures in Antarctica that he received the news his book was published and available for sale, just as he was disembarking the boat at Ushuaia, Argentina.
But Patrick still had one more leg of his world-wide travels to complete, this time taking in the length and breadth of Africa, before he could get his hands on the first copies. The rest, as they say, is history.
Patrick is currently working on his second book.
